I think the quote most often used to explain the concepts of mindfulness and meditation is from the philosopher William James who said, “We don’t notice the things we don’t want to notice.” This doesn’t mean that when we fail to notice something, we do so willingly. It’s often the opposite. We are so focused on what we don’t want to notice that we fail to notice the things we do want to notice.
The mind is a very powerful tool, and I’ve been using it on a daily basis since I was a teenager. It’s not always a good thing, and with the new trend of being anti-meditation, which I see as a form of self-medication, this quote might be the last straw. If we are constantly meditating to the point that we forget what we’ve learned and we are not even aware of what we did, then I think we have some serious problems.
I do realize that the quote is kind of an insult to the fact that I can probably change the subject as a writer and not as a reader, but we shouldn’t be surprised if you have some of the same concerns. We have a very small amount of knowledge about the world and the universe, and I have a pretty deep respect for the way in which we work.
The fact is that the majority of our actions and thoughts are totally unconscious. We don’t think, we don’t plan, we don’t dream, and we hardly even know we are doing it. The problem is that this unconscious action isn’t really voluntary. It’s automatic and completely involuntary.
This is the crux of the problem that we talk about in the article. We believe that our thoughts are voluntary, but they aren’t. They are just the way we are. And for the majority of us we really dont even know it.
There is something unique about the way we create our own characters, we see them in person. We dont know if we see them in action or in thought.
This quote is from the book of Romans, but it goes for our actions too. Although Romans makes it seem as if we have a great deal of control over our actions, we have little control over our thoughts. We don’t actually have any conscious control over our thoughts, and we certainly don’t have any conscious control over our actions. We are simply acting as we are, in a completely unconscious way. There is no way to explain this to the average person.
We do have control over every thought that we think. We can learn to stop thinking in the first place. We can learn to control our thoughts. Most of us would not consider this, but it’s the truth. So when in doubt, stop.
It’s all about our thoughts, and you should know that. You are the most powerful force in the universe, you can create your own reality, you can make it whatever you want it to be. Its time to stop thinking and do something about it.
